History
The Panzer III was originally developed as Germany’s primary medium tank for armoured divisions, intended to engage enemy armour while the Panzer IV supported with a larger-calibre gun. By 1942, the Ausf L represented an improved version with enhanced armour and the long-barrelled 5cm KwK 39 L/60, allowing it to remain competitive against Soviet T-34s. Additional side skirts offered increased protection against anti-tank rifles and shaped charges. The type saw heavy use during the campaigns of 1942 and was deployed in large numbers at the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, one of history’s largest tank battles. Though soon overshadowed by heavier German tanks like the Panther and Tiger, the Panzer III Ausf L remained an important part of Panzer formations during this period and exemplified the evolution of German armoured warfare.
