History:
The Vought F-8 Crusader entered service in the mid-1950s as the US Navy’s first supersonic carrier-based fighter. Its distinctive variable-incidence wing and powerful engine made it a formidable dogfighter, earning it the nickname “Last of the Gunfighters” due to its reliance on cannons in an era increasingly dominated by missiles. VF-162 “The Hunters” flew the F-8E during the Vietnam War, participating in key operations and air-to-air engagements. The Crusader remained in frontline service until replaced by the F-4 Phantom II, but its reputation as a fast, agile, and lethal aircraft left a lasting legacy in naval aviation history.
