History
The Douglas SBD Dauntless played a pivotal role in the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific War. On 4 June 1942, SBD-3s launched from carriers USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown, delivering devastating dive-bombing attacks against the Japanese fleet. Their precision strikes resulted in the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and later Hiryu—shifting the balance of naval power in favour of the United States. The Dauntless became renowned for its ruggedness, dive-bombing accuracy, and ability to bring its crews home despite heavy battle damage. This aircraft stands as a symbol of American resilience and tactical success during WWII.
