History
First recorded in 1160, Chillon Castle became the residence of the Counts of Savoy in the mid-12th century and was extensively expanded in the 13th century by Pietro II. Its history spans three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period. The castle gained literary fame in 1816 when Lord Byron wrote “The Prisoner of Chillon,” inspired by the imprisonment of Franço̧is de Bonivard between 1530 and 1536. Byron even carved his name into a pillar within the dungeon, which remains visible today.
Visitors to Chillon can explore four great halls, three courtyards, and numerous chambers, including the Camera domini — the Duke of Savoy’s 14th-century mural-adorned private room. Now preserved as Switzerland’s most visited historic monument, Chillon continues to draw admiration for its stunning location and well-preserved medieval design.
