History
Constructed between 1015 and 1023 under Sancho III the Elder of Navarra, Loarre Castle was built over the remains of a Roman fort. The original structure included the royal buildings, the Queen’s Tower, chapel, parade ground, and military quarters. Ramiro I later added the 22-metre-high Keep, providing panoramic views over the Hoya de Huesca valley. After periods of Muslim control, Sancho RamÃrez recaptured and fortified the castle, enclosing one hectare with defensive walls and multiple towers.
The castle features a blend of square and circular towers, the Kings’ Gateway with ornate Romanesque capitals, and a 12th-century church of Santa Maria with a barrel-vaulted apse. Inside, visitors can explore passageways, battlements, and the Queen’s Balcony, all constructed from durable masonry stone. Loarre Castle remains a remarkable example of medieval military architecture.
