History:
The P-51K was developed as a parallel production model to the P-51D, built at North American’s Dallas plant. Externally similar to the famous “D”, the K model used an Aeroproducts propeller and featured minor canopy and equipment differences. Powered by the Packard-built Merlin engine, the P-51K offered excellent high-altitude performance and long-range capability, making it a valuable escort fighter and ground-attack aircraft. Many P-51Ks served in Asia late in the war and continued in widespread post-war service, adding a unique chapter to the story of the Mustang’s enduring legacy.
