History:
The Yakovlev Yak-1b represented a major step forward in Soviet fighter design, combining agility, speed, and pilot protection in a compact airframe. Allied squadrons flying from Soviet bases, including the French GC3 “Normandie-Niemen” and the Polish “Warszawa” Regiment, used the Yak-1b to great effect in both offensive and defensive roles. Its sturdy structure and reliable Merlin-inspired Klimov M-105 engine made it a versatile and dependable aircraft. By 1945, Yak-1b fighters bearing Allied markings had become a symbol of cooperation between Soviet and Western pilots fighting against Axis forces.
