History
Norman infantry formed the backbone of Norman armies during the 11th and 12th centuries, supporting the heavy cavalry that defined their battlefield tactics. Armed with spears, swords, axes and shields, these foot soldiers were essential for holding ground and maintaining formation.
During the Norman Conquest of England, infantry played a crucial role alongside mounted knights and archers. At battles such as Hastings, disciplined infantry formations helped absorb enemy attacks and exploit weaknesses once opposing lines began to break. Their combination of flexibility and resilience made them a key element of medieval warfare across Western Europe.
