History
The Harrier was the world’s first operational jet aircraft capable of vertical or short take-off and landing, fundamentally changing how air power could be deployed. The AV-8A was the initial version operated by the United States Marine Corps, adapted from the British Harrier design to meet American operational requirements.
Entering service in the early 1970s, the AV-8A allowed the USMC to operate fixed wing aircraft from austere forward bases and amphibious assault ships, reducing reliance on traditional runways. Though later variants refined the concept further, the early Harrier proved the viability of V/STOL combat aircraft and established a lineage that would continue through multiple generations of development.
