History:
The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki, known by the Allied reporting name “Tojo”, was developed as a high-speed interceptor to counter enemy bombers. Unlike many Japanese fighters that prioritised manoeuvrability, the Ki-44 focused on climb rate and firepower, allowing it to reach high altitudes quickly and engage incoming threats.
Entering service in the early 1940s, the Ki-44-II variant featured improvements in performance and armament, making it more effective against heavily defended bomber formations. Although less agile than other Japanese aircraft, its speed and striking power made it an important part of Japan’s air defence strategy during the war.
