History
The Lancia Delta S4 was introduced in 1985 at the height of the Group B rally era, a period defined by rapid technological development and minimal regulation. Unlike many of its rivals, the S4 used both a turbocharger and a supercharger, delivering immediate throttle response alongside immense power.
This combination made the car brutally fast, capable of accelerating on loose surfaces with a ferocity rarely seen before or since. The Delta S4 achieved competitive success, but it also became closely associated with the dangers of Group B rallying.
Following a series of fatal accidents, the Group B category was cancelled at the end of the 1986 season. The Delta S4 remains a symbol of that era, representing both the peak of rally car engineering and the moment when the limits were finally judged too far.
