History
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress became one of the most recognisable American bombers of the Second World War, serving primarily with the United States Army Air Forces. Designed for long-range and high-altitude missions, it formed the backbone of the 8th Air Force’s campaign of daylight bombing over Europe. Its four engines, durable airframe, and heavy defensive armament made it both a formidable attacker and a resilient survivor, earning a reputation for bringing crews home even after severe damage.
The B-17F variant introduced significant improvements that expanded operational capability. It could carry greater payloads, operate over longer ranges, and defend itself with the help of ten .50 calibre machine guns. Throughout the air war, the B-17F contributed to major strategic missions targeting industrial sites, supply hubs, and infrastructure deep within enemy territory. Its role in these operations cemented the Flying Fortress as one of the most important aircraft of the era.
