HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant (1/72)
The HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant was developed by Sikorsky as a specialised combat search and rescue variant of the CH-53 Sea Stallion. Entering service with the United States Air Force in the late 1960s, it was designed to recover downed aircrew from hostile environments, often deep inside contested territory and under direct threat.
Compared to earlier versions, the HH-53C featured significant upgrades to improve survivability and range. These included an aerial refuelling probe, additional internal fuel tanks, reinforced armour protection, and provisions for defensive armament. Particular emphasis was placed on advanced radio and navigation systems, allowing close coordination with tanker aircraft, escort helicopters, and strike aircraft during complex rescue operations.

Robust construction and long flight endurance made the HH-53C particularly well suited to extended rescue missions. Its ability to remain on station, refuel in flight, and operate at long distances gave crews the confidence to attempt recoveries that would otherwise have been impossible.
The Super Jolly Green Giant became closely associated with the Vietnam War, where it played a vital role in saving the lives of countless aircrew. Its reputation for toughness and reliability, combined with the skill of its crews, cemented its place as one of the most important combat rescue helicopters of the Cold War era.
