History
The Spitfire Mk.IX was introduced in 1942 as a response to the performance of the German Fw 190. By fitting the powerful Merlin 61 engine, the Mk.IX restored the Spitfire’s competitive edge and became one of the most widely produced variants.
The Polish Fighting Team, known as Skalski Circus after its commander Stanislaw Skalski, flew Spitfires in North Africa in 1943. The unit achieved notable success, adding to the distinguished combat record of Polish pilots serving with the Allied air forces.
