Takom Plastic Model Kit
Israeli Army M51 “Degem Alef” Medium Tank (1/35)
This 1/35 scale M51 “Degem Alef” from Takom represents the most advanced Israeli upgrade of the M4 Sherman, developed to extend the service life of Israel’s post-war armoured fleet. Introduced in the late 1950s, the M51 combined the familiar Sherman chassis with a powerful 105 mm D.1508 cannon, creating a highly effective medium tank for regional conflicts.
The Degem Alef (Model A) was the first production configuration of the M51 programme, featuring a modified low-recoil version of the French CN-105-F1 gun. Takom’s kit captures the distinctive appearance of this unique conversion with detailed moulding and functional features.

History
After 1948, Israel acquired large numbers of surplus Sherman tanks from multiple sources. By the late 1950s, these vehicles were becoming obsolete, prompting the IDF to develop a comprehensive upgrade programme.
The M51 represented the final and most capable evolution of Israel’s Sherman fleet, pairing improved mobility with a high-velocity 105 mm gun capable of engaging contemporary armour. These tanks saw extensive service during the Six-Day War and Yom Kippur War, proving both reliable and effective.
For modellers, the M51 Degem Alef offers a fascinating blend of WWII-era design and Cold War firepower, making it a standout subject for modern Middle Eastern armour collections.
