The Messerschmitt Bf109E series formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force during the early years of WWII. The E-4 variant featured a powerful 1,100 hp Daimler-Benz DB 601Aa engine and was armed with two 7.9mm machine guns above the nose and a 20mm cannon in each wing. Early examples also incorporated bulletproof glass in the canopy front for enhanced pilot protection.

The Bf109E-4 proved itself in the Battle of Britain, matching the RAF Spitfire in performance and surpassing the Hurricane in speed and climb rate. However, its limited range restricted operational time over Britain to around fifteen minutes, leading to bomber losses. To address this, the E-7 was fitted with a 300-litre drop tank, extending range and combat effectiveness. E-4/7 variants went on to serve in Northern Africa, with some remaining in service for ground support roles until mid-1942, even after newer F-type models entered production.
