The North American P-51D Mustang is widely regarded as one of the finest fighter aircraft of World War II. Originally designed in 1940 for the British, the Mustang evolved into an exceptional long-range escort and air superiority fighter for the U.S. Army Air Force. The P-51D, with its distinctive bubble canopy, became the definitive version and was built in greater numbers than all other Mustang variants combined, with 9,603 produced.
