Zvezda Plastic Model Kit
IS-2 Soviet Heavy Tank (1/35)
This 1/35 scale IS-2 from Zvezda is a completely new-tool release, unrelated to the older Z3524 kit, and the improvement shows immediately. The moulding is crisp and the parts breakdown is purposeful, giving the large hull and turret a clean, well-defined structure. With 469 parts in the box, the build leans toward the detailed side, but the engineering feels steady rather than fiddly. The late-war fittings, including the rear gun travel lock and smoke grenade mounts, are captured sharply.
The finished model measures around 28.1cm in length, giving it a solid presence once the running gear and turret are in place. Surface detail is nicely handled, with subtle armour casting texture and tidy panel lines that respond well to washes and weathering. A decal sheet is included for marking options, and the upgraded moulding gives plenty of scope for painting styles from factory-fresh to heavily used frontline vehicles.

History
Developed in 1943, the IS-2 heavy tank was designed to counter the growing threat of German armour and to break through fortified positions. Its 122mm D-25T gun delivered a powerful punch against enemy tanks and strongpoints, while the vehicle’s thick armour and improved mobility gave Soviet crews a level of confidence earlier heavy tanks often lacked.
In late 1944 and early 1945 the IS-2 received several updates, including a rear gun travel lock and the addition of smoke grenade launchers, helping crews operate more effectively in fast-changing urban and frontline environments. The tank played a key role in the final stages of the Second World War, pushing through Eastern Europe and participating in assaults on major German cities. Its design set the foundation for post-war Soviet heavy armour, influencing vehicles such as the IS-3 and later Cold War developments.
