Zvezda Plastic Model Kit
MiG-31B Aircraft (1/72)
This 1/72 scale MiG-31B from Zvezda builds into an impressive model of the Soviet Union’s high-altitude, long-range interceptor. The kit consists of 121 parts with clean moulding and a purposeful layout that shows off the aircraft’s size, long fuselage and distinctive two-seat cockpit arrangement. The refuelling probe is included, reflecting the B-variant’s extended patrol capability, and the overall fit is straightforward as the large fuselage sections come together.
At 31.5cm long when finished, the model has a strong presence for the scale, with surface detail that suits the angular lines of the Foxhound. Panel definition is sharp, and the kit offers plenty of scope for subtle weathering or cleaner parade-style finishes. A decal sheet is included with markings for a Soviet aircraft, matching the era in which the MiG-31B entered service.

History
The MiG-31B entered service in 1990 as an upgraded development of the MiG-31, the world’s first operational interceptor capable of sustained supersonic speeds at high altitude. The B-variant featured an in-flight refuelling system, allowing far longer patrol times across the vast northern borders of the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation. Earlier MiG-31s were retrofitted with the same capability as the design matured.
The aircraft remains one of the fastest combat jets ever built, designed to intercept bombers, reconnaissance aircraft and cruise missiles at extreme ranges. In 2013, MiG-31 fighters set a record by flying more than 8,000 km in a single 7-hour mission with three air refuellings. The MiG-31B stands as a key component in long-range air defence and continues to serve in updated forms today.
