History:
The U.S. Medium Tank M3, known as the “Lee” in American service, was developed as an interim design before the arrival of the M4 Sherman. Featuring a 75mm gun mounted in the hull alongside a smaller turret with a 37mm gun, the M3 had a distinctive silhouette and provided the Allies with much-needed firepower in 1941–42. Early production versions, such as represented in this kit, lacked the additional ventilators and featured the original bogie suspension system. The M3 saw combat in North Africa, where it helped counter German armour, and also served with the British (as the “Grant”) and Soviet forces. Although soon replaced by the Sherman, the M3 was a crucial step in American tank development and an important asset during the early years of WWII.
