History:
The Westland Lysander was designed to meet the British Army’s need for a modern aircraft capable of reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and close support. Entering service in the late 1930s, it quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional short take-off and landing ability, which allowed it to operate from improvised airstrips close to the front lines. Initially serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France, the Lysander suffered heavy losses due to its vulnerability to enemy fighters, with over 100 aircraft lost in that campaign alone. Despite these setbacks, the aircraft later found a vital role in clandestine operations, transporting agents and supplies into occupied Europe under the cover of night. Its ability to land on short, rough fields made it indispensable for these missions. Beyond Europe, the Lysander was also employed in the Middle East, India, and other theatres of war. Its unique design, with high wings and fixed undercarriage, made it instantly recognisable, and it remains one of the more unusual yet fascinating aircraft of the Second World War.
