History
HMS Ajax was launched in March 1934 and served as one of the Royal Navy’s Leander-class light cruisers, a class designed to combine speed, endurance and firepower for worldwide service. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Ajax was already an experienced ship, having served on overseas stations and participated in numerous fleet exercises.
Her most famous action came in December 1939 during the Battle of the River Plate. Alongside HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles, Ajax engaged the German pocket battleship off the coast of South America. Despite being outgunned, the British cruisers fought aggressively, damaging the German raider and forcing her into Montevideo harbour.
The engagement ultimately led to Graf Spee being scuttled by her own crew, marking one of the first major Allied naval successes of the war. HMS Ajax would continue to serve throughout the conflict, earning a reputation for reliability and determination, and securing her place as one of the most famous light cruisers in Royal Navy history.
