The 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle for Stalingrad will be celebrated in 2012. It was one of the greatest battles of World War II, which ultimately led to the destruction of the German 6th Army and was a turning point in the German/Soviet war. After the German attack on the city in the summer and autumn of 1942, over 230,000 German soldiers and their allies were encircled by the Red Army in Novembery 1942. Most of the remaining soldiers ceased hostilities at the end of January/beginning February 1943 and were taken captive, but without that leading to an official capitulation.
