History
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was one of the most versatile and widely used fighters of the Cold War. Entering service in the 1960s, the F-4E variant introduced an internal M61 Vulcan cannon, improved avionics, and updated weapon systems. During the Vietnam War, USAF Phantoms carried out air superiority, ground-attack, and reconnaissance missions, proving their adaptability in a demanding theatre. The type went on to serve in air forces worldwide, including the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), remaining a front-line fighter well into the 1980s. Its legacy as a powerful multi-role jet endures among aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
