History
The Douglas C-47 Skytrain became one of the most important transport aircraft of World War II, playing a vital role in every major theatre of operations. Entering USAAF service in 1941, the C-47 carried troops, supplies, and equipment, and was equally capable of towing gliders or dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines. During the Normandy invasion in June 1944, fleets of C-47s delivered thousands of airborne troops into occupied France. They also served in the Pacific, China-Burma-India, and Mediterranean campaigns, demonstrating remarkable durability and versatility. By war’s end, more than 10,000 C-47s had been built, and many continued in military and civilian use for decades. The Skytrain remains a symbol of Allied logistics and airborne operations during WWII.
