Academy Plastic Model Kit
USN F-14B “VF-103 Jolly Rogers Last Cruise” (1/72) 12578
The Academy 1/72 scale F-14B Tomcat kit captures the US Navy’s legendary two-seat fighter in its final deployment with VF-103 “Jolly Rogers.” This version of the Tomcat, originally designated F-14+, was powered by General Electric F110 engines, delivering greater thrust and reliability than the earlier Pratt & Whitney-equipped F-14A. The kit includes finely moulded details, variable geometry wings that can be built extended or swept, drop tanks, and a full complement of air-to-air missiles. Cartograf decals provide options for five aircraft from VF-103’s historic last cruise in 2004.

History
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat entered service in the 1970s as the US Navy’s premier fleet defence fighter, combining long-range radar with the ability to carry the AIM-54 Phoenix missile. The F-14B variant, introduced in the late 1980s, replaced the underpowered TF30 engines with the more capable F110-GE-400, improving performance and reliability. VF-103, the “Jolly Rogers,” became one of the most recognisable squadrons to operate the Tomcat, with its skull-and-crossbones insignia symbolising naval fighter tradition. In 2004, VF-103 flew the Tomcat on its last operational cruise before transitioning to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The retirement of the Tomcat ended an era of naval aviation, but its legacy as one of the most iconic and admired US fighters lives on in both history and modelling.
