History:
The Vought F4U Corsair entered service in 1942 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most formidable carrier-based fighters of WWII. Powered by a massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine and armed with six .50 calibre machine guns, the Corsair was both fast and heavily armed. The F4U-1 was the first production version, flown by both US Navy and Marine Corps squadrons. It achieved dominance in the Pacific Theatre, excelling in dogfights against Japanese aircraft and in ground-attack roles. Nicknamed the “Whistling Death” by its adversaries, the Corsair remained in service long after the war, continuing into the Korean War and earning its place as one of the greatest naval fighters ever built.
