History
The Vought F4U Corsair, introduced in 1940, became one of the most successful naval fighters of WWII and continued to serve with distinction into the Korean War. The F4U-4, an upgraded variant, featured improved performance and rugged durability, making it ideal for close air support missions in Korea. On 4 December 1950, during the Battle of Jangjin Reservoir, Ensign Jesse Brown, the US Navy’s first black aviator, was shot down behind enemy lines. His wingman, Lt (JG) Thomas Hudner, crash-landed his own Corsair in an attempted rescue. Though Brown was lost, Hudner’s bravery earned him the Medal of Honor. Their story remains one of sacrifice and brotherhood, remembered in both naval history and the 2022 film “Devotion.” The Corsair’s enduring combat record secured its legacy as one of the greatest piston-engined fighters ever built.
