History:
The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind was developed in 1944 to protect German armoured units from increasing Allied air attacks. Built on the proven Panzer IV chassis, it featured an open-topped turret mounting the 2cm Flakvierling 38, a quad-barrelled anti-aircraft gun capable of delivering a devastating rate of fire. Although primarily intended for air defence, the Wirbelwind also proved effective against lightly armoured ground targets and infantry. Around 100 vehicles were produced, serving mainly on the Western Front in the final stages of the war. Its unique appearance and battlefield role have made it one of the most recognisable German armoured vehicles of WWII.
