History
The Panzer II was designed in the mid-1930s as an interim solution while more powerful tanks like the Panzer III and IV were under development. Armed with a 20mm cannon and a coaxial MG34, it was lightly armoured but highly mobile, making it effective in early Blitzkrieg campaigns. By the time of the North African theatre, the Panzer II Ausf F had received thicker armour and refinements that extended its service life. Deployed under Rommel’s Afrika Korps, these tanks participated in key battles across Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia. Although increasingly outmatched by Allied armour, the Panzer II remained vital for reconnaissance and infantry support. Its presence in North Africa highlights the adaptability and resourcefulness of Axis forces during one of WWII’s most challenging campaigns.
