History
The Jagdpanther was introduced in 1944 as a heavy tank destroyer, combining the Panther tank’s mobility and sloped armour with the devastating firepower of the 8.8cm PaK 43 anti-tank gun. The Ausf G1 was the early production version, distinguished by its specific exhaust layout and mantlet design. First seeing action in Normandy during the summer of 1944, the Jagdpanther quickly proved itself capable of destroying Allied armour at long range while remaining difficult to defeat head-on. Despite its effectiveness, production numbers remained limited due to Germany’s strained wartime industry. By late 1944, Jagdpanthers were also engaged in Belgium during the Ardennes Offensive and in defensive battles within Germany. Today, surviving examples highlight the vehicle’s significance as one of the most powerful tank destroyers of WWII.
