History:
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27 was a ground-attack derivative of the MiG-23 fighter, entering service in the 1970s. NATO reporting name “Flogger D,” the aircraft featured a redesigned nose for improved visibility, reinforced airframe, and specialised avionics for strike missions. Armed with a powerful six-barrel 30mm cannon and capable of carrying a wide range of bombs and rockets, the MiG-27 became a formidable close air support aircraft. Operated by the Soviet Air Force and Warsaw Pact allies, it also saw service with India, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan. Although retired from Russian service in the 1990s, the MiG-27 played a significant role in Soviet and allied ground-attack operations throughout the Cold War.
