History:
The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, often nicknamed the “Jug,” was one of the heaviest and most powerful single-engine fighters of World War II. Equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, it excelled as both a high-altitude escort and a ground-attack aircraft. The Bubbletop canopy introduced in the later D-models improved pilot visibility, a significant advantage in combat. Armed with eight .50 calibre machine guns and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, the P-47 proved devastating against ground targets while remaining a formidable dogfighter. Its rugged construction allowed it to withstand heavy damage and return home, earning the respect of pilots and ground crews alike. The Thunderbolt played a crucial role in the European Theatre, supporting Allied advances from D-Day through to the war’s end.
