History:
The M10 GMC (Gun Motor Carriage) was the most widely used American tank destroyer of World War II. Entering service in 1942, it was based on the Sherman chassis and armed with a 3-inch (76.2 mm) gun, designed to counter the growing threat of German armour. Its open-topped turret allowed excellent visibility but left crews vulnerable to artillery and small-arms fire. The M10 saw extensive service with US forces in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe, as well as with Allied nations through Lend-Lease. Though later outclassed by heavier tank destroyers, the M10 remained a key weapon in the fight against German armour.
