Airfix Plastic Model Kit
Boulton Paul Defiant NF.1 (1/48) A05132
This 1/48 scale Boulton Paul Defiant NF.1 captures one of the RAF’s more unusual fighters, a turret-armed aircraft that found its place in the darkness of Britain’s night skies. The kit offers crisp detail across 113 parts, including the distinctive four-gun turret and the clean lines of the Defiant’s airframe. With two scheme options and thoughtful surface detail, it builds into a striking centrepiece for any WWII aircraft collection.
Airfix have shaped this tooling to give a balanced build, something that feels steady in hand without being overly complicated. Panels line up nicely, the cockpit fits together with minimal fuss, and the turret assembly settles into its mount more easily than you might expect for a subject like this. Whether you plan a straight OOB build or a careful weathered nightfighter finish, there is enough here to bring the aircraft’s character through.

History
The Boulton Paul Defiant began life as a turret-armed day fighter, an idea that the RAF quickly learned was not suited to the close, twisting combat of the Battle of Britain. Once the Luftwaffe adapted to its unusual layout the Defiant struggled in daylight, yet it found a second wind where few expected it. Moved to nightfighter units, the aircraft suddenly had room to breathe. Crews, many of whom had little to no night-fighting experience, began developing their own interception techniques while flying into the dark over Britain.
In this nocturnal role the Defiant’s limitations eased, and its strengths stood out more clearly. The heavy turret no longer left it vulnerable to diving attacks and the black paint schemes helped it slip through searchlights and moonlit cloud. During the height of the Blitz, Defiant crews scored meaningful victories against Luftwaffe raiders and played a part in shaping Britain’s early night defence system. The all-black Defiants that patrolled the skies became a defining image of the RAF’s early nightfighter operations.
