History
The English Electric Canberra was developed by a young and highly capable design team based in Lancashire, marking the company’s first original aircraft design. At a time when many doubted their chances against more established manufacturers, English Electric produced a twin jet bomber that was aerodynamically clean, technologically advanced and built for speed.
Impressed by the aircraft’s performance, the Air Ministry placed an advanced order for 132 aircraft even before full service testing had been completed. This confidence proved well founded, as the Canberra quickly demonstrated exceptional speed and high altitude capability, placing it well ahead of contemporary fighter aircraft.
The first production Canberra B.2 entered Royal Air Force service with No.101 Squadron in early 1951. For several years it remained virtually untouchable by opposing fighters, earning the RAF an aircraft that was admired worldwide. The Canberra would go on to serve in numerous roles and conflicts, becoming one of the most successful jet aircraft designs of its era.
