History
The Cromwell tank was developed to meet the British Army’s need for a fast and manoeuvrable cruiser tank capable of exploiting breakthroughs on the battlefield. Its defining feature was the powerful V12 Meteor engine, an innovative development of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered the Spitfire and Hurricane during the Battle of Britain.
This engine gave the Cromwell exceptional speed for a tank of its era, allowing it to keep pace with rapidly advancing armoured units. The Mk.VII was the most numerous and refined version, featuring improved armour and suspension, while the Mk.VI Close Support variant carried a howitzer to provide smoke and high explosive fire in support of other units.
Cromwells saw extensive service in North West Europe from 1944 onwards, particularly with British armoured divisions following the Normandy landings. Their speed and reliability made them well suited to the fast moving operations of the later war, securing the Cromwell a respected place among Britain’s most effective Second World War tanks.
