History
The Mikoyan MiG-21, known by NATO as “Fishbed,” is one of the most produced jet fighters in aviation history. The MiG-21bis, introduced in the early 1970s, represented one of the final and most capable variants of this iconic aircraft. Equipped with an upgraded Tumansky R-25 engine, enhanced avionics, and improved weapons systems, the MiG-21bis remained a formidable frontline fighter well into the late Cold War era. Its supersonic performance, combined with relatively low production cost and ease of maintenance, made it a popular export aircraft, serving in air forces across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The MiG-21bis played significant roles in conflicts ranging from the Arab-Israeli wars to the Indo-Pakistani War, becoming a symbol of Soviet aerospace engineering. Even today, some examples remain in limited service, a testament to its enduring legacy as one of the most recognisable jet fighters of the 20th century.
