History
The Bell AH-1 Cobra was the world’s first purpose built attack helicopter, developed from combat experience that highlighted the need for a fast, narrow and heavily armed escort platform. Its slim profile and tandem cockpit reduced target exposure while improving forward visibility for the crew.
The AH-1S variant represented a series of improvements in fire control systems, engine performance and survivability. Operated by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Cobra played a defensive role focused on anti-armour and close support missions. Though later designs would expand on the concept, the Cobra established the blueprint for modern attack helicopters and remains one of the most recognisable rotary-wing combat aircraft ever produced.
