History
The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most capable carrier based fighters of the Second World War, instantly recognisable by its inverted gull wing design. Developed to accommodate a powerful engine and large propeller, the Corsair combined speed, range and heavy firepower in a single airframe.
The F4U-1D variant became one of the most widely used versions, serving extensively with the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific theatre. By the later stages of the war, the Corsair had proven itself not only as an air superiority fighter but also as a highly effective ground attack aircraft. Its durability, performance and adaptability ensured it remained in frontline service well beyond WWII, cementing its reputation as one of the great piston engine fighters of the era.
