History:
The Mitsubishi F-1 was introduced in the late 1970s as Japan’s first indigenous supersonic combat aircraft since the Second World War. Developed from the Mitsubishi T-2 trainer, it was adapted for strike missions, equipped to carry a range of weapons including anti-ship missiles.
Serving with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, the F-1 played a key role in maritime defence and ground attack operations during the Cold War period. Although eventually replaced by more modern aircraft, it remains an important milestone in Japan’s aviation history and a symbol of its return to advanced aircraft development.
