History:
The USS Essex (CV-9) was laid down in 1941 and entered service with the United States Navy in 1942. As the lead ship of the Essex class, it set the standard for American fleet carriers during World War II, combining speed, protection and a large air group.
Essex-class carriers played a central role in the Pacific War, supporting major operations and providing air superiority across vast distances. Their effectiveness and versatility ensured they remained in service long after the war, making them some of the most successful aircraft carriers ever built.
