History
The FV4101 Charioteer was developed in the early 1950s as a stopgap tank destroyer for the British Army. Based on the Cromwell chassis, it was rearmed with a 20-pounder gun in a new, lightly armoured turret to give it greater anti-tank capability during the early Cold War period. The vehicle was produced in limited numbers and was exported to several countries, including Finland. The Finnish Army operated the Charioteer into the 1960s, where it supplemented their armoured forces during a time of transition and modernisation. Though its service life was relatively short, the Charioteer represents a notable example of post-war improvisation, bridging the gap between WWII designs and more advanced Cold War tanks.
