History
The I.A.R. 80 was a domestically designed Romanian fighter that entered service in 1940. The early versions were equipped with modest armament but offered excellent manoeuvrability and performance comparable to contemporary fighters at the outbreak of the war. By June 1941, when Romania joined the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, the I.A.R. 80 was the main fighter of the Romanian Air Force. These aircraft escorted bombers, attacked ground targets, and engaged Soviet fighters during the opening months of the conflict. While soon outclassed by newer Soviet and Allied designs, the I.A.R. 80’s contribution in 1941 established it as an important part of Romania’s air war effort and a symbol of its aviation industry’s capabilities.
