History
The I.A.R. 81C was a Romanian fighter developed from the earlier I.A.R. 80 design, featuring improvements in armament and capability. Entering service in 1943, the type played an important role in the defence of Romania during the summer of 1944, particularly during the Allied bombing raids targeting oil facilities at Ploiești. Pilots of the I.A.R. 81C engaged American heavy bombers and their escorts in some of the fiercest air battles fought over Eastern Europe. Although outclassed by newer Allied fighters, the aircraft earned respect for its agility and the determination of its pilots. The battles of 1944 marked the high point of the I.A.R. 81C’s combat service, before Romania switched allegiance later that year.
