History
During the Second World War, the United States Army Air Corps organised its bomber forces into groups consisting of several squadrons operating the same aircraft type. The B-26 Marauder became a key medium bomber used by American forces in Europe, known for its speed, durability and heavy bomb load.
Many bomber units operated from temporary forward airfields constructed using Marston Mat steel planking. These perforated metal plates created strong runways on soft ground and allowed rapid construction of operational airbases close to the front lines. Such airfields were widely used in Italy and France during the later stages of the war.
