Kitty Hawk Models Plastic Model Kit
XF5U-1 Flying Pancake (1/48) KH80135
This 1/48 scale XF5U-1 “Flying Pancake” from Kitty Hawk Models captures one of the most unusual experimental aircraft ever developed for the U.S. Navy. With its almost circular lifting body design and twin propellers mounted at the wing tips, the XF5U-1 was intended to combine high speed with excellent low-speed handling for carrier operations.
The kit features finely recessed panel lines and a detailed cockpit interior, reflecting the distinctive layout of this radical design. Crisp clear parts are provided for the canopy, and the engineering allows the modeller to appreciate the compact yet powerful configuration of the aircraft. Decals and a full colour paint guide are included to assist with finishing.

History
The Vought XF5U-1 was developed during the 1940s as an advanced carrier-based fighter concept. Its unique disc-shaped airframe was designed to provide exceptional lift and manoeuvrability, with powerful piston engines driving large propellers at the tips of the wing.
Although testing showed promise, rapid advances in jet technology rendered the concept obsolete before it could enter service. The prototype was ultimately scrapped, but the “Flying Pancake” remains one of the most fascinating and unconventional aircraft designs of the era.
