History
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the largest and heaviest single engine fighters of the Second World War, renowned for its durability, firepower and ability to absorb damage. Earlier variants excelled in Europe as high altitude escorts and ground attack aircraft.
The P-47N was developed in response to the demands of the Pacific War, where long distances between bases required fighters with exceptional range. Featuring an extended wing, increased fuel capacity and improved performance, the N-series enabled Thunderbolt units to escort B-29 Superfortress bombers during the final stages of the war.
Entering service in 1945, the P-47N represented the ultimate evolution of the Thunderbolt design, combining long range capability with the rugged qualities that had made the aircraft so successful.
