Kitty Hawk Models Plastic Model Kit
Sukhoi Su-17 / Su-22UM-3K (1/48)
The Su-17UM and Su-22UM-3K were two-seat trainer and conversion variants of the Su-17 and Su-22 fighter-bomber family. Designed to prepare pilots for operational service on the single-seat aircraft, they retained the same rugged airframe and variable-sweep wing configuration, with the addition of a lengthened fuselage and tandem cockpit.
This 1/48 scale kit from Kitty Hawk Models captures the distinctive proportions of the two-seat UM-3K variant, including the extended canopy, revised fuselage layout and swing-wing configuration. Fine recessed panel lines, a detailed dual-control cockpit and accurately shaped airframe components allow the modeller to represent either Su-17 or export Su-22 versions.

History
As the Su-17 and Su-22 entered widespread service across the Soviet Union and its allied nations, the need for an effective conversion trainer became essential. The UM-series aircraft were developed to familiarise pilots with the handling characteristics, systems and operating procedures of the swing-wing fighter-bomber before transitioning to single-seat combat variants.
Despite their primary training role, the Su-17UM and Su-22UM-3K retained limited combat capability and were often used for weapons training, secondary strike duties and operational conversion flights. Serving with numerous air forces throughout the Cold War and beyond, these two-seat Fitters played a vital but often overlooked role in maintaining the effectiveness of one of the most widely operated Soviet combat aircraft families.
