Trumpeter Plastic Model Kit
Usaaf P-47D-30 Thunderbolt ‘Dorsal Fin’ Fighter Aircraft (1/32)
This 1/32 scale P-47D-30 Thunderbolt from Trumpeter represents the later production variant fitted with the distinctive dorsal fin, introduced to improve directional stability. Nicknamed the “Jug” by its crews, the P-47 was one of the largest and most powerful single engine fighters of the Second World War, renowned for its rugged construction and devastating ground attack capability.
The kit captures the aircraft’s bulky fuselage, broad wings, and aggressive stance with large scale surface detail that lends itself well to painting and weathering. Trumpeter’s tooling provides a solid basis for displaying the Thunderbolt either clean or configured for combat, highlighting the aircraft’s role as both a high altitude escort fighter and a formidable fighter bomber.

The P-47D-30 served extensively in the European theatre during WWII, where its eight .50 calibre machine guns and heavy bomb load made it especially effective in close air support. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, the Thunderbolt could absorb tremendous battle damage and still bring its pilot home. Although initially designed as a high altitude interceptor, it ultimately earned its reputation as one of the Allies’ most successful ground attack aircraft, supporting advancing troops across occupied Europe.
